Some have noticed that we are living in times where many sad things are going on inside the Church (Also called apostasy!), and for these it looks like it is only going in one direction.
This is notes from a study on God’s Remnant Church, taking a look at whether it will fall or not. The focus is not to identify the remnant. A whole lot more could be said about that as well as our main topic. So remember, these are just notes! But we hope it can be an inspiration and a blessing for you.

“Before accepting any doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain “Thus saith the Lord” in its support.” GC P. 595

1. Who is the Remnant?

Revelation 12:17: And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

– Describes the faithful ones left after the attacks of the Dragon against the church during the 1260 years (538-1798).
With other words, it is established after 1798.

Revelation 14:12: Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

– Keeping God’s commandments, including the Sabbath.

In 12:17, we read that the remnant have “the testimony of Jesus”. There will be a manifestation of the Spirit of Prophecy. (Rev 19:10)

Revelation 14:6: And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.

Revelation 10:11: And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
– It will be a world wide Church.

Revelation 14:6-14
The remnant will be preaching the Three Angels Messages to the whole world.
– Judgment (1844), Sabbath, Health, Death, Commandments…

– It has to be a world wide movement.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only organized church proclaiming the Law of God including the Sabbath and in addition the Spirit of Prophecy.

It was organized 1863 after being a movement for a while.

The Bible mentions only one remnant, even though some will fall, and others be added.

2. Did God establish the Church? Is he leading it?
Ephesians 4:4: There is one body…

Colossians 1:18: And he is the head of the body, the church…
– The Bible says that there is only one true body, or church.

“Upon the foundation that Christ Himself had laid, the apostles built the church of God. {AA 595.2}

Ephesians 2:19: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

Ephesians 2:20: And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

Ephesians 2:21: In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

Ephesians 2:22: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

– God’s Church always has a structure.

The organization of the church at Jerusalem was to serve as a model for the organization of churches in every other place where messengers of truth should win converts to the gospel…

As an important factor in the spiritual growth of the new converts the apostles were careful to surround them with the safeguards of gospel order. Churches were duly organized in all places in Lycaonia and Pisidia where there were believers. Officers were appointed in each church, and proper order and system were established for the conduct of all the affairs pertaining to the spiritual welfare of the believers. {CCh 245.3}

This was in harmony with the gospel plan of uniting in one body all believers in Christ, and this plan Paul was careful to follow throughout his ministry. Those who in any place were by his labor led to accept Christ as the Saviour were at the proper time organized into a church. Even when the believers were but few in number, this was done. The Christians were thus taught to help one another, remembering the promise, “Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20. 441 {CCh 245.4}

If it is in harmony with the gospel plan to have an organized Church, this is vitally important for the end time, as the Great Controversy will be ended!

ILL: Cornerstone – building. Human body – a system that works together. It doesn’t function without order, cooperation. The same with the Church. It has to belong to something.

God established His Remnant Church upon Christ, and is surely leading it.

Ellen White sometimes talk about an invisible Church, but mostly when she uses the word Church, she refers to God’s Organized Remnant Church.

In the following statement she talks plainly about the terminology “the visible Church”, here in this context. With this in mind, let’s read:

“Dear Brethren: As all the different members of the human system unite to form the entire body, and each performs its office in obedience to the intelligence that governs the whole, so the members of the church of Christ should be united in one symmetrical body, subject to the sanctified intelligence of the whole. {4T 16.1}

The advancement of the church is retarded by the wrong course of its members. Uniting with the church, although an important and necessary act, does not make one a Christian nor ensure salvation. We cannot secure a title to heaven by having our names enrolled upon the church book while our hearts are alienated from Christ… {4T 16.2}

Our profession is an exalted one. As Sabbathkeeping Adventists we profess to obey all God’s commandments and to be looking for the coming of our Redeemer… {4T 16.3}

We should all feel our individual responsibility as members of the visible church and workers in the vineyard of the Lord…{4T 16.4}

God is leading out a people to stand in perfect unity upon the platform of eternal truth. Christ gave Himself to the world that He might “purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” This refining process is designed to purge the church from all unrighteousness and the spirit of discord and contention, that they may build up instead of tear down, and concentrate their energies on the great work before them…{4T 17.1}

Many do not realize the sacredness of church relationship and are loath to submit to restraint and discipline. Their course of action shows that they exalt their own judgment above that of the united church, and they are not careful to guard themselves lest they encourage a spirit of opposition to its voice. Those who hold responsible positions in the church may have faults in common with other people and may err in their decisions; but notwithstanding this, the church of Christ on earth has given to them an authority that cannot be lightly esteemed. Christ, after His resurrection, delegated power unto His church, saying: “Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained.” {4T 17.2}

Church relationship is not to be lightly canceled; yet when the path of some professed followers of Christ is crossed, or when their voice has not the controlling influence which they think it deserves, they will threaten to leave the church…{4T 17.3}

Every believer should be wholehearted in his attachment to the church. Its prosperity should be his first interest, and unless he feels under sacred obligations to make his connection with the church a benefit to it in preference to himself, it can do far better without him. It is in the power of all to do something for the cause of God. There are those who spend a large amount for needless luxuries; they gratify their appetites, but feel it a great tax to contribute means to sustain the church. They are willing to receive all the benefit of its privileges, but prefer to leave others to pay the bills. …They should defer their individual judgment to the judgment of the body of the church.

If the world sees a perfect harmony existing in the church of God, it will be a powerful evidence to them in favor of the Christian religion…Christ saw that unity and Christian fellowship were necessary to the cause of God, therefore He enjoined it upon His disciples. And the history of Christianity from that time until now proves conclusively that in union only is there strength. Let individual judgment submit to the authority of the church. {4T 19.2}

Let’s sum up what Ellen White said here:

  • A Church where it is possible to be a member, containing a protocol of membership.
  • The members may choose wrong course.
  • The members are Adventists and Sabbathkeepers.
  • God is going to cleanse this Church from all impurities.
  • The Church has authority to discipline.
  • The Church’s authority weighs more than personal judgment.
  • Christ saw that unity in the Church is necessary for the cause of God. (The Mystery of God)

God’s invisible Church only has wheat.

God’s visible Church has tares and wheat.

3. Will the Remnant Church as God instituted last until the end?

Ephesians 5:23: For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

Ephesians 5:24: Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Ephesians 5:25: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 5:26: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Ephesians 5:27: That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

– This will be in the end time (2 Pet 3:10-14)
– Mystery of God will be finished in the end time (Revelation 10:7, Col 1:27).
– Ellen White also talks about this cleansing, including in the system. We will see more about it later.

This is an important part of the Great Controversy.

It is not merely talking about the people here, but about the organized body!

“That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:27. The church, enfeebled and defective though it be, is the only object on earth on which Christ bestows His supreme regard. He is constantly watching it with solicitude, and is strengthening it by His Holy Spirit. Will we, as members of His church, allow Him to impress our minds and to work through us to His glory? {SD 13.2}

“As Christ sat looking upon the party that waited for the bridegroom, He told His disciples the story of the ten virgins, by their experience illustrating the experience of the church that shall live just before His second coming. {COL 406.2}

“Christ loves His church…The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to “the principalities and powers in heavenly places,” the final and full display of the love of God…. The church is God’s fortress, His city of refuge, which He holds in a revolted world…. It is the theater of His grace, in which He delights to reveal His power to transform hearts. {SD 13.4}
God’s love for His church is infinite. His care over His heritage is unceasing. {SD 13.5}

“By giving the gospel to the world it is in our power to hasten our Lord’s return. We are not only to look for but to hasten the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:12, margin).–DA 633 (1898). {LDE 39.4}
He has put it in our power, through cooperation with Him, to bring this scene of misery to an end.–Ed 264 (1903).” {LDE 39.5}

Nehemiah 1:8: Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
Nehemiah 1:9: But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
– We read in Revelation that God’s Remnant will keep His commandment, and He will gather them into His Church! (See also v. 5)

Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own. {LDE 39.2}

“We want to understand our proper relation to God: we want to know how we stand in the presence of God. I want you to see that it is not in the providence of God that any finite man shall, by any device or reckoning that he may make of figures, or of symbols, or of types, know with any definiteness in regard to the very period of the Lord’s coming. What shall we know? We are to study the signs which show that He is at the door…
We may be waiting, but not in idle expectancy, saying, “I will not plant that tree, because the Lord is coming. I will not do this work in building a meetinghouse for the people to assemble to worship God, because the Lord is coming.” No: if the Lord is coming, we want to work with the more diligence to uphold and to gather the Lord’s sheep and to bring them into the fold. {10MR 272.1}
– Before the Lord’s coming, there will be a fold. God’s Remnant Church, will be there until the end.
– See John 10

Jeremiah 23:1: Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.

Jeremiah 23:2: Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.

Jeremiah 23:3: And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.

Joel 2:16: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
Joel 2:23: …and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
– When the latter rain falls, there will still be elders and a congregation. They will be gathered in one fold as seen in Jeremiah, and John 10, and Nehemiah 1.

– Early church, a model, former rain.

– Two things that needs to take place before the latter rain: Unity and Sanctification.
– Note that the “congregation” is to be sanctified, just as we saw in Eph 5:27.

ILL: Remnant – the remaining of a clothing. Still the same fabric, but only the rests of it.

4. Will the Church really stay Organized as a System?
“O how Satan would rejoice if he could succeed in his efforts to get in among this people, and disorganize the work at a time when thorough organization is essential, and will be the greatest power to keep out spurious uprisings, and to refute claims not endorsed by the word of God! We want to hold the lines evenly, that there shall be no breaking down of the system of organization and order that has been built up by wise, careful labor. License must not be given to disorderly elements that desire to control the work at this time.
Some have advanced the thought that, as we near the close of time, every child of God will act independently of any religious organization. But I have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as every man’s being independent. The stars of heaven are all under law, each influencing the other to do the will of God, yielding their common obedience to the law that controls their action. And, in order that the Lord’s work may advance healthfully and solidly, His people must draw together.” –9T 257, 258
This is in line with what we have seen. It is a very clear quote! God want’s to gather His sheep into the fold.

Will there be problems?
“Through centuries of persecution, conflict, and darkness, God has sustained His church. Not one cloud has fallen upon it that He has not prepared for; not one opposing force has risen to counterwork His work, that He has not foreseen. All has taken place as He predicted. He has not left His church forsaken, but has traced in prophetic declarations what would occur, and that which His Spirit inspired the prophets to foretell has been brought about. All His purposes will be fulfilled. His law is linked with His throne, and no power of evil can destroy it. Truth is inspired and guarded by God; and it will triumph over all opposition. AA 11.3

If we can be sure that Ellen White condemns the Church, why would we just accept her to talk about the organized Church regarding the negative statements, and while saying that it will not fall, she talks about an invisible Church?
Let the testimonies explain themselves!

”Letters come to me entreating an answer; I know that many men take the testimonies the Lord has given, and apply them as they suppose they should be applied, picking out a sentence here and there, taking it from its proper connection, and applying it according to their idea. Thus poor souls become bewildered, when could they read in order all that has been given, they would see the true application, and would not become confused. Much that purports to be a message from Sister White, serves the purpose of misrepresenting Sister White, making her testify in favor of things that are not in accordance with her mind or judgment. This makes her work very trying. Reports fly from one to another regarding what Sister White has said. Each time the report is repeated, it grows larger. If Sister White has anything to say, leave her to say it. No one is called upon to be a mouthpiece for Sister White.” (Selected Messages 1, p. 44)

“The testimonies themselves will be the key that will explain the messages given, as scripture is explained by scripture.” (Selected Messages 1, p. 42)

“When thus searched out and brought together, they will be found to be perfectly fitted to one another.” (Ed 123)

“I was confirmed in all I had stated in Minneapolis, that a reformation must go through the churches. Reforms must be made, for spiritual weakness and blindness were upon the people who had been blessed with great light and precious opportunities and privileges. As reformers they had come out of the denominational churches, but they now act a part similar to that which the churches acted. We hoped that there would not be the necessity for another coming out.

While we will endeavor to keep the “unity of the Spirit” in the bonds of peace, we will not with pen or voice cease to protest against bigotry.–EGW’88 356, 357 (1889). {LDE 48.1}

Later, she stated this:

“You will take passages in the Testimonies that speak of the close of probation, of the shaking among God’s people, and you will talk of a coming out from this people of a purer, holier people that will arise. Now all this pleases the enemy. . . . Should many accept the views you advance, and talk and act upon them, we would see one of the greatest fanatical excitements that has ever been witnessed among Seventh-day Adventists. This is what Satan wants.–1SM 179 (1890). {LDE 51.1}

The Lord has not given you a message to call the Seventh-day Adventists Babylon, and to call the people of God to come out of her. All the reasons you may present cannot have weight with me on this subject, because the Lord has given me decided light that is opposed to such a message. . . . {LDE 51.2}

I know that the Lord loves His church. It is not to be disorganized or broken up into independent atoms. There is not the least consistency in this; there is not the least evidence that such a thing will be.–2SM 63, 68, 69 (1893). {LDE 51.3}

“The church is in the Laodicean state. The presence of God is not in her midst.–1NL 99 (1898). {LDE 49.1}

Let’s see what it does not say, to understand her point.
– It does not say God’s presence will never be there.
– It does not say the Church will fall.

– It simply says it is in a Laodicean condition, and Christ is not in her MIDST.

Let’s also look at the context:
“The church is in the Laodicean state. The presence of God is not in her midst. If Christ were formed within, the hope of glory, conformity to His image would be seen, and the church trials which separate the members from Christ would disappear. . . .
Mission work must not cease because of limited means. {1NL 99}
– Maybe God wasn’t in the midst because of lack of mission work with the members.

It is also clear what she mean and didn’t mean in her statement at the next General Conference session:

“Who do you suppose has been among us since this Conference began? Who has kept away the objectionable features that generally appear in such a meeting? Who has walked up and down the aisles of this Tabernacle? The God of heaven and His angels. And they did not come here to tear you in pieces, but to give you right and peaceable minds. They have been among us to work the works of God, to keep back the powers of darkness, that the work God designed should be done should not be hindered. The angels of God have been working among us. . . . {LDE 54.1}

I was never more astonished in my life than at the turn things have taken at this meeting. This is not our work. God has brought it about. Instruction regarding this was presented to me, but until the sum was worked out at this meeting I could not comprehend this instruction. God’s angels have been walking up and down in this congregation. I want every one of you to remember this, and I want you to remember also that God has said that He will heal the wounds of His people.–GCB April 25, 1901, pp. 463, 464. {LDE 54.2}

“The Redeemer of the world does not sanction experience and exercise in religious matters independent of his organized and acknowledged church. {LP 31.1}

“God has a church upon the earth, who are his chosen people, who keep his commandments. He is leading, not stray off-shoots, not one here and one there, but a people. {RH, September 12, 1893 par. 19}

God has a church on earth who are lifting up the downtrodden law, and presenting to the world the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world. . . . {LDE 43.1}

There is but one church in the world who are at the present time standing in the breach and making up the hedge, building up the old waste places. . . . {LDE 43.2}

Let all be careful not to make an outcry against the only people who are fulfilling the description given of the remnant people, who keep the commandments of God and have faith in Jesus. . . . God has a distinct people, a church on earth, second to none, but superior to all in their facilities to teach the truth, to vindicate the law of God. . . . My brother, if you are teaching that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is Babylon, you are wrong.–TM 50, 58, 59 (1893).
– This is clearly also talking about the organized SDA-Church.

The Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy talks about a shaking in God’s Church. Why will there be a shaking?
“The Lord is soon to come. There must be a refining, winnowing process in every church, for there are among us wicked men who do not love the truth or honor God.–RH March 19, 1895. {LDE 173.3}
We are in the shaking time, the time when everything that can be shaken will be shaken. The Lord will not excuse those who know the truth if they do not in word and deed obey His commands.–6T 332 (1900). {LDE 173.4}
– “In every Church”, which again shows how the Church will still be organized in the end.

This process will keep going on even until the mark of the beast arrives.
“The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death. The contest is between the commandments of God and the commandments of men. In this time the gold will be separated from the dross in the church.–5T 81 (1882). {LDE 173.6}

“When the law of God is made void the church will be sifted by fiery trials, and a larger proportion than we now anticipate will give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.–2SM 368 (1891). {LDE 174.2}

“God has a church upon the earth who are His chosen people, who keep His commandments. He is leading, not stray offshoots, not one here and one there, but a people. The truth is a sanctifying power; but the church militant is not the church triumphant. There are tares among the wheat. “Wilt thou then that we . . . gather them up?” was the question of the servant; but the master answered, “Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.” The gospel net draws not only good fish, but bad ones as well, and the Lord only knows who are His. {CCh 240.1} It is our individual duty to walk humbly with God. We are not to seek any strange, new message. We are not to think that the chosen ones of God who are trying to walk in the light compose Babylon. 427 {CCh 240.2} Although there are evils existing in the church, and will be until the end of the world, the church in these last days is to be the light of the world that is polluted and demoralized by sin. The church, enfeebled and defective, needing to be reproved, warned, and counseled, is the only object upon earth upon which Christ bestows His supreme regard. The world is a workshop in which, through the cooperation of human and divine agencies, Jesus is making experiments by His grace and divine mercy upon human hearts. 428 {CCh 240.3} God has a distinct people, a church on earth, second to none, but superior to all in their facilities to teach the truth, to vindicate the law of God. God has divinely appointed agencies—men whom He is leading, who have borne the heat and burden of the day, who are cooperating with heavenly instrumentalities to advance the kingdom of Christ in our world. Let all unite with these chosen agents, and be found at last among those who have the patience of the saints, who keep the commandments of God, and have the faith of Jesus. 429 {CCh 240.4}

– Like we discovered earlier, God will present to Him a glorious Church until the end. But there will have to be changes done, and for that, a shaking is necessary.
– She says, that there will be no offshoots, and we will finally (in the end) be found in the Church, if we cooperate with God.
– Militant means fighting. So the church will fight until it gets triumphant, and the tares will be removed.
So there are two phases:
1. Church Miliant
2. Church Triumphant

Will the shaking include leaders?
“Many will show that they are not one with Christ, that they are not dead to the world, that they may live with Him; and frequent will be the apostasies of men who have occupied responsible positions. –RH Sept. 11, 1888. {LDE 179.1}
– That means that there will be apostasy apparent also in leadership positions.

“”Has God no living church? He has a church, but it is the church militant, not the church triumphant. We are sorry that there are defective members . . . .While the Lord brings into the church those who are truly converted, Satan at the same time brings persons who are not converted into its fellowship. While Christ is sowing the good seed, Satan is sowing the tares. There are two opposing influences continually exerted on the members of the church. One influence is working for the purification of the church, and the other for the corrupting of the people of God. . . . {FLB 305.2} Although there are evils existing in the church, and will be until the end of the world, the church in these last days is to be the light of the world that is polluted and demoralized by sin. . . . {FLB 305.3} There is but one church in the world who are at the present time standing in the breach, and making up the hedge, building up the old waste places; and for any man to call the attention of the world and other churches to this church, denouncing her as Babylon, is to do a work in harmony with him who is the accuser of the brethren. . . .The whole world is filled with hatred of those who proclaim the binding claims of the law of God, and the church who are loyal to Jehovah must engage in no ordinary conflict. . . .Those who have any realization of what this warfare means, will not turn their weapons against the church militant, but with all their powers will wrestle with the people of God against the confederacy of evil. {FLB 305.4} Those who start up to proclaim a message on their own individual responsibility, who, while claiming to be taught and led of God, still make it their special work to tear down that which God has been for years building up, are not doing the will of God. Be it known that these men are on the side of the great deceiver. Believe them not. 306 {FLB 305.5}
1. Christ is sowing the good seed. Satan us sowing the tares. If Christ’s seed brings purification. Will satan be victorious in overcoming God’s organized Church?
2. If we understand what role the Church plays, what this warfare means, we will not turn our weapons against it.
3. Those who individually act, trying to tear down what God has established are on the side of the devil.

ILL: Our body can get sick sometimes, but we can find a remedy for it by seeking help from the Doctor.

The church upon the earth is not perfect. The church militant is not the church triumphant. Earth is not heaven. The church is composed of erring men and women who will need patient, painstaking effort, that they may be educated, trained, and disciplined by precept and example, to do their work with acceptance here in this life, and to be crowned with glory and immortality in the future life. {9MR 154.2}

  • Here Ellen White makes it clear that, when using these terms, she is talking about God’s organized Church on earth.

Let’s continue to see how she is using these terms:
“We need not be thus disappointed, for the Lord has not warranted us in coming to the conclusion that the church is perfect; and all our zeal will not be successful in making the church militant as pure as the church triumphant.–TM 47 (1893). {LDE 61.3}
– This is not our work, but God’s work!

“The work is soon to close. The members of the church militant who have proved faithful will become the church triumphant.— Letter 32, 1892. {Ev 707.1}
“Multitudes will receive the faith and join the armies of the Lord.–Review and Herald, July 23, 1895. {Ev 700.1}
– Many will leave, but many will also join God’s Church.
– What about the rest? As we have seen there will be a cleansing of the tares.

“The life of Christ was a life charged with a divine message of the love of God, and He longed intensely to impart this love to others in rich measure. Compassion beamed from His countenance, and His conduct was characterized by grace, humility, truth, and love. Every member of His church militant must manifest the same qualities, if he would join the church triumphant.–FE 179 (1891) {LDE 62.2}

“The Lord desires us to realize that it is of great importance that we stand in these last days upon the platform of eternal truth. Those who think that the church militant is the church triumphant make a great mistake. The church militant will gain great triumphs, but it will also have fierce conflicts with evil that it may be firmly established upon the platform of eternal truth. And every one of us should be determined to stand with the church upon this platform. . . . {UL 152.3}

The last conflict
“The days will come when the righteous will be stirred to zeal for God because of the abounding iniquity. None but divine power can stay the arrogance of Satan united with evil men; but in the hour of the church’s greatest danger most fervent prayer will be offered in her behalf by the faithful remnant, and God will hear and answer at the very time when the guilt of the transgressor has reached its height. . . . They will be jealous for the honor of God. They will be zealous in prayer, and their faith will grow strong” Testimonies to the Church , vol. 5, p. 524

– Despite what happened to the Remnant in the Old Testament, this remnant is called faithful.

Acts 2:47: “The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

– It was true in apostolic times, and it is even more important in the very end.

– See context – clearly about the visible Church, and structure. (v.40-46)
– EGW regarding this verse and Acts 4:32, 33: “These scenes are to be repeated, and with greater power.” COL 121.

“Not until this condition shall be reached, and the union of the church with the world shall be fully accomplished throughout Christendom, will the fall of Babylon be complete. The change is a progressive one, and the perfect fulfillment of Revelation 14:8 is yet future. Notwithstanding the spiritual darkness and alienation from God that exist in the churches which constitute Babylon, the great body of Christ’s true followers are still to be found in their communion. {GC 389-390.1}

ILL: For a business to work, it takes organization and leadership. For example a hospital.

Christ, the head of the Church, is in charge over the system, and He is the one that is adding people to the Church. It has problems and issues, just as prophesied, it will be in a lukewarm condition. But Christ, the Great Physician, knows the remedy, and will take it from Church Militant to Church Triumphant.

“The church of God below is one with the church of God above. {CCh 240.5}

And “Order is heaven’s first law” (CH 101), so we know that God also would do this with His Church on earth.

The Highest Power under Heaven
“Christ gives power to the voice of the church. “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” No such thing is countenanced as one man’s starting out upon his own individual responsibility and advocating what views he chooses, irrespective of the judgment of the church. God has bestowed the highest power under heaven upon His church. It is the voice of God in His united people in church capacity which is to be respected. 431 {CCh 241.4} The Word of God does not give license for one man to set up his judgment in opposition to the judgment of the church, neither is he allowed to urge his opinions against the opinions of the church. If there were no church discipline and government, the church would go to fragments; it could not hold together as a body. There have ever been individuals of independent minds who have claimed that they were right, that God had especially taught, impressed, and led them. Each has a theory of his own, views peculiar to himself, and each claims that his views are in accordance with the word of God. Each one has a different theory and faith, yet each claims special light from God. These draw away from the body, and each one is a separate church of himself. All these cannot be right, yet they all claim to be led of the Lord. {CCh 241.5}
– We saw earlier how she reaffirmed this thought some years before she died, regarding the General Conference.

“I have been shown that no man’s judgment should be surrendered to the judgment of any one man. But when the judgment of the General Conference, which is the highest authority that God has upon the earth, is exercised, private independence and private judgment must not be maintained, but be surrendered. Your error was in persistently maintaining your private judgment of your duty against the voice of the highest authority the Lord has upon the earth.

{3T 492.2}

“Paul was to take those steps necessary in conversion. He was required to unite himself to the very people whom he had persecuted for their religion. Christ here gives all His people an example of the manner of His working for the salvation of men. The Son of God identified Himself with the office and authority of His organized church. His blessings were to come through the agencies that He has ordained, thus connecting man with the channel through which His blessings come. {3T 431.2}

  • Either God has an organized Church or He does not. If He has, this will be used for the salvation of men. And it is clear so far that He does have a Church. There can be nothing between, despite the apostasy that you find within it.

“In the conversion of Paul are given us important principles which we should ever bear in mind. The Redeemer of the world does not sanction experience and exercise in religious matters
independent of His organized and acknowledged church, where He has a church.  {3T 432.2}
Many have the idea that they are responsible to Christ alone for their light and experience, independent of His acknowledged followers in the world. But this is condemned by Jesus
…when he[Paul] asks, “What wilt Thou have me to do?” the Saviour does not tell him directly, but places him in connection with His churchHe directs Saul to the church, thus acknowledging the power that He has invested in it as a channel of light to the world. It is Christ’s organized body upon the earth, and respect is required to be paid to His ordinances. {3T 433.1}

Is the General Conference no longer the voice of God?

“That these men should stand in a sacred place, to be as the voice of God to the people, as we once believed the General Conference to be,–that is past.” {GCB, April 3, 1901 par. 25}
– This statement does not say that it will never be God’s voice again, neither does it say the Church will fall. What was sister White’s solution?
She continues:
“What we want now is a reorganization. We want to begin at the foundation, and to build upon a different principle. {GCB, April 3, 1901 par. 25}
“New Conferences must be formed. It was in the order of God that the Union conference was organized in Australasia. . . . It is not necessary to send thousands of miles to Battle Creek for advice, and then have to wait weeks for an answer. Those who are right on the ground are to decide what shall be done.–GCB April 5, 1901, pp. 69, 70. {LDE 53.4}

“It has been a necessity to organize union conferences, that the General Conference shall not exercise dictation over all the separate conferences. The power vested in the Conference is not to be centered in one man, or two men, or six men; there is to be a council of men over the separate divisions.–Ms 26, April 3, 1903.
– This is what we have today. No power is centered upon one man.

If there is still confusion, she clarifies herself:
I have often been instructed by the Lord that no man’s judgment should be surrendered to the judgment of any other one man. Never should the mind of one man or the minds of a few men be regarded as sufficient in wisdom and power to control the work and to say what plans shall be followed. But when, in a General Conference, the judgment of the brethren assembled from all parts of the field is exercised, private independence and private judgment must not be stubbornly maintained, but surrendered. Never should a laborer regard as a virtue the persistent maintenance of his position of independence, contrary to the decision of the general body.

At times, when a small group of men entrusted with the general management of the work have, in the name of the General Conference, sought to carry out unwise plans to restrict God’s work, I have said that I could no longer regard the voice of the General Conference, represented by these few men, as the voice of God. But this is not saying that the decisions of a General Conference composed of an assembly of duly appointed, representative men from all parts of the field should not be respected.

God has ordained that the representatives of His church from all parts of the earth, when assembled in a General Conference, shall have authority. The error that some are in danger of committing is in giving to the mind and judgment of one man, or of a small group of men, the full measure of authority and influence that God has invested in His church in the judgment and voice of the General Conference assembled to plan for the prosperity and advancement of His work.”
– 9T 260, 261 (1909). + LDE 56
– Here, when sister White refer to God’s Church, it is clearly the organized body on earth.
– The negative statements about the General conference earlier was simply because the president was quite alone, and they was present all over the congregation, in meetings, etc. (See earlier in the chapter in LDE)

In one of her last years, she stated:
God has invested His church with special authority and power which no one can be justified in disregarding and despising, for he who does this despises the voice of God.–AA 164 (1911). {LDE 56.2}

God’s Power:
“In the vision of the prophet Ezekiel there was the appearance of a hand beneath the wings of the cherubim. This is to teach God’s servants that it is divine power that gives success. Those whom God employs as His messengers are not to feel that His work is dependent on them. Finite beings are not left to carry this burden of responsibility. He who slumbers not, who is continually at work for the accomplishment of His designs, will carry forward His work. He will thwart the purposes of wicked men and will bring to confusion the counsels of those who plot mischief against His people. He who is the King, the Lord of hosts, sitteth between the cherubim, and amidst the strife and tumult of nations He guards His children still. When the strongholds of kings shall be overthrown, when the arrows of wrath shall strike through the hearts of His enemies, His people will be safe in His hands. {PK 176.1}

The power of God is our assurance. If necessary, He will finish His work Himself.
If God has a schedule and we can neither hasten nor delay it, why should we do anything at all?

“And in this last generation the parable of the mustard seed is to reach a signal and triumphant fulfillment. The little seed will become a tree. The last message of warning and mercy is to go to “every nation and kindred and tongue” (Revelation 14:6-14), “to take out of them a people for His name” (Acts 15:14; Revelation 18:1). And the earth shall be lightened with His glory. {COL 79.3}

Is it really necessary to stay in the Church?

Many have the idea that they are responsible to Christ alone for their light and experience, independent of His acknowledged followers in the world. But this is condemned by Jesus in His teachings and in the examples, the facts, which He has given for our instruction. Here was Paul, one whom Christ was to fit for a most important work, one who was to be a chosen vessel unto Him, brought directly into the presence of Christ; yet He does not teach him the lessons of truth. He arrests his course and convicts him; and when he asks, “What wilt Thou have me to do?” the Saviour does not tell him directly, but places him in connection with His church. They will tell thee what thou must do. Jesus is the sinner’s friend, His heart is ever open, ever touched with human woe; He has all power, both in heaven and upon earth; but He respects the means which He has ordained for the enlightenment and salvation of men. He directs Saul to the church, thus acknowledging the power that He has invested in it as a channel of light to the world. It is Christ’s organized body upon the earth, and respect is required to be paid to His ordinances. In the case of Saul, Ananias represents Christ, and he also represents Christ’s ministers upon the earth who are appointed to act in Christ’s stead. {CCh 242.3}
In the conversion of Paul are given us important principles which we should ever bear in mind. The Redeemer of the world does not sanction experience and exercise in religious matters independent of His organized and acknowledged church, where He has a church. {CCh 242.4}

The Son of God identified Himself with the office and authority of His organized church. His blessings were to come through the agencies that He has ordained, thus connecting man with the channel through which His blessings come. {CCh 243.1}

“The Lord in His wisdom has arranged that by means of the close relationship that should be maintained by all believers, Christian shall be united to Christian and church to church. Thus the human instrumentality will be enabled to co-operate with the divine. Every agency will be subordinate to the Holy Spirit, and all the believers will be united in an organized and well-directed effort to give to the world the glad tidings of the grace of God. 444 {CCh 247.1} As all the different members of the human system unite to form the entire body, and each performs its office in obedience to the intelligence that governs the whole, so the members of the church of Christ should be united in one symmetrical body, subject to the sanctified intelligence of the whole. 445 {CCh 247.2}

  • This will happen in the end, as we have seen God’s orderly hand work with things, and in particular in the end time.

“The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization. Were this reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. The founders of this system would go into the cities, and do a wonderful work. The Sabbath of course, would be lightly regarded, as also the God who created it. Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement. The leaders would teach that virtue is better than vice, but God being removed, they would place their dependence on human power, which, without God, is worthless. Their foundation would be built on the sand, and storm and tempest would sweep away the structure. {1SM 204.2}
– She wrote this in 1904, referring to the doctrines established. These are not to be discarded! It’s truth!

“Zechariah’s vision of Joshua and the Angel applies with peculiar force to the experience of God’s people in the closing scenes of the great day of atonement. The remnant church will then be brought into great trial and distress…Satan numbers the world as his subjects; he has gained control even of many professing Christians. But here is a little company who are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph would be complete…As Joshua pleaded before the Angel, so the remnant church, with brokenness of heart and unfaltering faith, will plead for pardon and deliverance through Jesus, their Advocate. They are fully conscious of the sinfulness of their lives, they see their weakness and unworthiness; and they are ready to despair. {PK 588.1}

“There will be, among the remnant of these last days, as there were with ancient Israel, those who wish to move independently, who are not willing to submit to the teachings of the spirit of God, and who will not listen to advice or counsel. Let such ever bear in mind that God has a church upon the earth, to which He has delegated power. Men will want to follow their own independent judgment, despising counsel and reproof; but just as surely as they do this, they will depart from the faith, and disaster and the ruin of souls will follow. Those who rally now to support and build up the truth of God, are ranging themselves on one side, standing united in heart, mind, and voice, in defense of the truth; while those who do not labor in harmony of purpose and action, who choose their own unsanctified human judgment as perfection of action, are ranging themselves on the side of Satan, and are defending his cause. {MR311 8.2}
– Who will listen to this counsel?!

– This is the church that will appear to fall, but it will not fall, but the sinners of Zion will be sifted out.

– While Babylon, a counterfeit to God’s true Church is an organized system, and will be until the end. We have discovered that God’s Remnant Church also will be.
– Satan always counterfeit, and he will also keep a Babylon organized.

– We have seen that “God has bestowed the highest power under heaven upon His church” and there is no time to act independently from it. God is calling people out from Babylon, into His Holy Church. Even if there are problems within the Church, Christ is still the head, and will prepare us for His coming. He uses the shaking to sift out members, leaders that are in apostasy, and new members will fill their places.

(See LDE 182.1)

5. The Mystery of God and its relation to God’s Remnant Church

(See the video explaining the mystery of God)
Mystery of God has to finish:
“Our work has been given us of God. What, then, will be the condition of those who refuse to hear the words which God has sent them, because they cross their track or reprove their wrongs? If you are thoroughly convinced that God has not spoken by us, why not act in accordance with your faith and have no more to do with a people who are under so great a deception as this people are? If you have been moving according to the dictates of the Spirit of God you are right and we are wrong. God is either teaching His church, reproving their wrongs and strengthening their faith, or He is not. This work is of God, or it is not. God does nothing in partnership with Satan. My work for the past thirty years bears the stamp of God or the stamp of the enemy. There is no halfway work in the matter. The Testimonies are of the Spirit of God, or of the devil. In arraying yourself against the servants of God you are doing a work either for God or for the devil. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” What stamp does your work bear? It will pay to look critically at the result of your course. {4T 229.2}

Ephesians 3:8: Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

Ephesians 3:9: And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Ephesians 3:10: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

Ephesians 3:11: According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

The church is God’s appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized for service, and its mission is to carry the gospel to the world. From the beginning it has been God’s plan that through His church shall be reflected to the world His fullness and His sufficiency. The members of the church, those whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, are to show forth His glory. The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to “the principalities and powers in heavenly places,” the final and full display of the love of God. Ephesians 3:10 {AA 9.1} {CCh 242.2}
1. The Church is an agency.
2. The Church is organized.
3. The Church is the repository of the riches of the grace of God.
4. In the Church will be manifest the mystery of God – fully!

If God has been leading His Remnant Church, and there will be no other, it is not going to fall, because it plays an important part toward the end of the Great Controversy. And like we saw in the beginning, it is according to the gospel plan to have an organized Church. Thus, it has to be done in the very end!

At the theatre scene of the universe, He will present it a “glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle…holy and without blemish.”

“Light was given by His Spirit that there must be order and thorough discipline in the church–that organization was essential. System and order are manifest in all the works of God throughout the universe. Order is the law of heaven, and it should be the law of God’s people on the earth.–TM 26 (1902).

“The church of Christ, enfeebled, defective as she may appear, is the one object on earth upon which he bestows, in a special sense, his love and his regard. The church is the theater of his grace, in which he delights in making experiments of mercy on human hearts. The Holy Spirit is his representative, and it works to effect transformations so wonderful that angels look upon them with astonishment and joy…The church is God’s fortress, his city of refuge, which he holds in a revolted world. {PH154 18.2}
– This is describing the defects of the Church, clearly the organized Church.
– The Church is the theater of God’s grace!

The church has failed, sadly failed, to meet the expectations of her Redeemer, and yet the Lord does not withdraw Himself from His people. He bears with them still, not because of any goodness found in them, but that His name may not be dishonored before the enemies of truth and righteousness, that the satanic agencies may not triumph in the destruction of God’s people. He has borne long with their waywardness, unbelief and folly. With wonderful forbearance and compassion He has disciplined them. If they will heed His instruction He will cleanse away their perverse tendencies, saving them with an everlasting salvation and making them eternal monuments of the power of His grace.–ST Nov. 13, 1901. {LDE 58.2}

Ezekiel 36:20: And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land.

Ezekiel 36:21: But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went.

Ezekiel 36:22: Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.

Ezekiel 36:23: And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

Ezekiel 36:24: For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

Ezekiel 36:25: Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

Ezekiel 36:26: A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:27: And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Ezekiel 36:28: And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
– This is the mystery of God that will be finished. Righteousness by faith, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

“If the world is to be convinced of sin as transgressors of God’s law, the agency must be the Holy Spirit working through human instrumentalities. The church needs now to shake off her death-like slumber; for the Lord is waiting to bless His people who will recognize the blessing when it comes, and diffuse it in clear, strong rays of light. “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean. . . . And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes” (Ezekiel 36:25-27). {YRP 188.3}

If the wilderness of the church is to become as a fruitful field, and the fruitful field to be as a forest, it is through the Holy Spirit of God poured out upon His people. The heavenly agencies have long been waiting for the human agents, the members of the church, to cooperate with them in the great work to be done. They are waiting for you. So vast is the field, so comprehensive the design, that every sanctified heart will be pressed into service as an agent of divine power. . . . {YRP 188.4}

Let all who believe the truth for this time put away their differences; put away envy and evil speaking and evil thinking. Press together, press together. “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” (1 Peter 1:22).–General Conference Bulletin, Feb. 28, 1893. {YRP 188.5}

Colossians 1:24: Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:

Colossians 1:25: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

Colossians 1:26: Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

Colossians 1:27: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

6. How will God cleanse His Church?
“I tell you, my brethren, the Lord has an organized body through whom
He will work. . . . When anyone is drawing apart from the organized body of God’s commandment-keeping people, when he begins to weigh the church in his human scales and begins to pronounce judgment against them, then you may know that God is not leading him. He is on the wrong track.–3SM 17, 18 (1893). {LDE 51.4}
– We are not to pronounce judgment against God’s Church. He will judge people and the work we do!

– Here is a good example of someone who is unsure whether the Church will fall or not. If one is unsure, one will not be so passionate about bringing people in, rather pronounce judgment upon it, because of it’s errors.

“Whole conferences are becoming leavened with the same perverted principles. “For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.” The Lord will work to purify His church. I tell you in truth, the Lord is about to turn and overturn in the institutions [SEE APPENDIX.] called by His name. {TM 372.4}

Just how soon this refining process will begin I cannot say, but it will not be long deferred. He whose fan is in His hand will cleanse His temple of its moral defilement. He will thoroughly purge His floor. {TM 373.1}

– God will purify His Church! He will turn and overturn His institutions.
– Here we see God calls the Church His temple.

“The Lord declares concerning them, “They have turned unto Me their back, and not the face, though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them; yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.” We are amid the perils of the last days, the time will soon come when the prophecy of Ezekiel 9 will be fulfilled; that prophecy should be carefully studied, for it will be fulfilled to the very letter.

{1888 1303.1}

Let’s see what Ezekiel say about the temple/Church:

Ezekiel 9:4: And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

Ezekiel 9:5: ¶And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity:

Ezekiel 9:6: … and begin at my sanctuary

God will begin judging His sanctuary/temple/the Church. Remember that this will have a literal fulfillment in the end time!
It is not saying that the temple will be ruined, rather cleansed!

Ellen White makes it clear that it is talking about the Church:

“Mark this point with care: Those who receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the Holy Ghost, represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those “that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done” in the church. Their love for purity and the honor and glory of God is such, and they have so clear a view of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, that they are represented as being in agony, even sighing and crying. Read the ninth chapter of Ezekiel. {3T 267.1}
– If it will be like this in the sealing time, the Church will still exist.

“Study also the tenth chapter which represents the hand of God as at work to bring perfect method and harmonious working into all the operations of his prepared instrumentalities. The eleventh and twelfth chapters also should receive critical, thoughtful attention. Let these prophecies be studied on your knees before God; unless you take up the stumbling-blocks which by your own perverse spirit you have laid in the way of many who have been connected with you, God will turn His face utterly from you and your associates. {1888 1303.1}

What is God’s prepared instrumentalities?
“God desires that heaven’s plan shall be carried out, and heaven’s divine order and harmony prevail, in every family, in every church, in every institution. Did this love leaven society, we should see the outworking of noble principles in Christian refinement and courtesy and in Christian charity toward the purchase of the blood of Christ. Spiritual transformation would be seen in all our families, in our institutions, in our churches. When this transformation takes place, these agencies will become instrumentalities by which God will impart heaven’s light to the world and thus, through divine discipline and training, fit men and women for the society of heaven. {AH 535.3}
– Some of God’s prepared instrumentalities is families, institutions, churches. According to Ellen White, Ezekiel describes how God will bring perfect method and harmonious working into these all operations of His instrumentalities.

Ezekiel 10:4: Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub, and paused over the threshold of the temple; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the LORD’S glory.

One day God’s glory will be seen in His temple here on earth – His Church, His institutions, His families.

Ezekiel 11:13: …Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel?

Ezekiel 11:17: Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

Ezekiel 11:18: And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence.

Ezekiel 11:19: And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
– God will not only Himself cleanse the institutions, but also His Church with it’s people.
He will also use human beings to do the cleansing.
– Here is a gathering again described like in Joel, John 10 and Jeremiah 23, that will happen with God’s remnant. His remnant Church is the destination. Thus, we are calling people out of Babylon, and in to God’s organized Church. If God is a God of order, why would he not care for this in the very end time, when He will bring things to perfection through His grace?

“Satan will work his miracles to deceive; he will set up his power as supreme. The church may appear as about to fall, but it does not fall. It remains, while the sinners in Zion will be sifted out–the chaff separated from the precious wheat. This is a terrible ordeal, but nevertheless it must take place. None but those who have been overcoming by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony will be found with the loyal and true, without spot or stain of sin, without guile in their mouths…. The remnant that purify their souls by obeying the truth gather strength from the trying process, exhibiting the beauty of holiness amid the surrounding apostasy. I know that the Lord loves His church. It is not to be disorganized or broken up into independent atoms. There is not the least consistency in this; there is not the least evidence that such a thing will be. Those who shall heed this false message and try to leaven others will be deceived and prepared to receive advanced delusions, and they will come to nought.
I am encouraged and blessed as I realize that the God of Israel is still guiding His people, and that He will continue to be with them, even to the end.
We cannot now step off the foundation that God has established. We cannot now enter into any new organization; for this would mean apostasy from the truth. The church, soon to enter upon her most severe conflict, will be the object most dear to God upon earth. The confederacy of evil will be stirred with power from beneath, and Satan will cast all the reproach possible upon the chosen ones whom he cannot deceive and delude with his satanic inventions and falsehoods. But exalted “to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins,” will Christ, our representative and head, close His heart, or withdraw His hand, or falsify His promise? No; never, never. {Mar 203}
– Satan is trying to make the Church fall, or look like it is falling!
– Sometimes Ellen White talks about the invisible Church. The context will make that clear. Why does God have an invisible Church?
Because all are not called out of Babylon yet, and until that has happened + the shaking, God’s children will still be outside.
But here, and many other places, it is clear that she talks about God’s organized Church.
– Again we see how Ellen White points to the importance the organized Church plays toward the end of the Great Controversy. It has to be a fold and a gathering!

Zion is God’s Church on earth:
“What can we say to the slothful church member to make him realize the necessity of unearthing his talent and putting it out to the exchangers? There will be no idler, no slothful one, found inside the kingdom of heaven. O that God would set this matter in all its importance before the sleeping churches! O that Zion would arise and put on her beautiful garments! O that she would shine!–Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 434

“Christ did not refer to Peter as being the rock upon which he would found his church. His expression, “this rock,” applied to himself as the foundation of the Christian church. In Isaiah 28:16, the same reference is made: “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion, for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation.” It is the same stone to which reference is made in Luke 20:17, 18. {2SP 272.3}
– Talking about Christ being the corner stone, the foundation of His Church – Zion.
– Then, at His coming, Christ will “present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” (Eph 5:27)

What is the chaff that is to be separated from the wheat?
“Divisions will come in the church. Two parties will be developed. The wheat and tares grow up together for the harvest.–2SM 114 (1896). {LDE 172.3}
There will be a shaking of the sieve. The chaff must in time be separated from the wheat. Because iniquity abounds, the love of many waxes cold. It is the very time when the genuine will be the strongest.–Letter 46, 1887.” {LDE 173.1}
– This is the whole issue in the very end, this is why the Church may appear to fall. But what happens when the chaff is separated from the Wheat? The Church will become pure and victorious, as God has promised!

Just like sanctification is the work of a lifetime, and the last generation will perfectly reflect Christ, so the Church will be a part of this.

In the parable of the wheat and the tares, we see the reason why the tares were not to be plucked up; it was lest the wheat be rooted up with the tares. Human opinion and judgment would make grave mistakes. But rather than have a mistake made, and one single blade of wheat rooted up, the Master says, “Let both grow together until the harvest;” then the angels will gather out the tares, which will be appointed to destruction. Although in our churches, that claim to believe advanced truth, there are those who are faulty and erring, as tares among the wheat, God is long-suffering

and patient. {TM 45.2}
– We need to trust God when He says so, and let He do the work! If we don’t trust the Lord in these matters, we will do a great mistake.

God will not fail His church in the hour of her greatest peril. He has promised deliverance. “I will bring again the captivity of Jacob’s tents,” He has declared, “and have mercy on his dwelling places.” Jeremiah 30:18. {PK 538.3}

“As we near the final crisis, instead of feeling that there is less need of order and harmony of action, we should be more systematic than heretofore.–3SM 26 (1892). {LDE 47.3}

7. Conclusion

“Those who claim to be looking for the return of the Saviour should bring into active service all the powers of their being. The church on earth is to be the light of the world. God designs that through the individual members of His church, life-giving beams shall shine forth into the dark places of earth and into the heart of every benighted soul. Thus the whole earth is to be lightened with His glory. {Ms2-1914 (June 5, 1914) par. 2}

The church of Christ on earth is amid the moral darkness of a disloyal world, which is trampling upon the law of Jehovah. But their Redeemer, who has purchased their ransom with the price of His own precious blood, has made every provision that His church shall be a transformed body, illumined with the Light of the world, possessing the glory of Emmanuel. The bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, shining through His church, will gather into His fold every lost, straying sheep, who will come unto Him and find refuge in Him. They will find peace and light and joy in Him who is peace and righteousness for ever (Letter 89c, 1897).  {7BC 968.3}

Has God no living church? He has a church, but it is the church militant, not the church triumphant. We are sorry that there are defective members, that there are tares amid the wheat. . . . Although there are evils existing in the church, and will be until the end of the world, the church in these last days is to be the light of the world that is polluted and demoralized by sin. The church, enfeebled and defective, needing to be reproved, warned, and counseled, is the only object upon earth upon which Christ bestows His supreme regard.–TM 45, 49 (1893). {LDE 52.2}
– It is impossible that God’s invisible Church will have tares. It consists only of wheat. Therefore His organized Church will play a most essential role in the end!

“When the storm of persecution really breaks upon us, the true sheep will hear the true Shepherd’s voice. Self-denying efforts will be put forth to save the lost, and many who have strayed from the fold will come back to follow the great Shepherd. The people of God will draw together, and present to the enemy a united front. . . . The love of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the world that we have been with Jesus and learned of Him. Then will the message of the third angel swell to a loud cry, and the whole earth will be lightened with the glory of the Lord.–Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 401. (1900) {Ev 693.2}
– If there will be no other system, this has to be organized through the Church! Because this is describing organization. And God will not destroy His Church.

“As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel’s message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition. {GC 608.2}

The leaders in God’s cause, as wise generals, are to lay plans for advance moves all along the line. In their planning they are to give special study to the work that can be done by the laity for their friends and neighbors. The work of God in this earth can never be finished until the men and women comprising our church membership rally to the work and unite their efforts with those of ministers and church officers. {9T 116.4}
– In the end there will be: “Leaders”, “generals”, “ministers”, “church officers”, people having “church membership”. If God’s work cannot be finished without cooperation of the system of the Church, we need to cooperate!

There is no need to doubt, to be fearful that the work will not succeed. God is at the head of the work, and He will set everything in order. If matters need adjusting at the head of the work God will attend to that, and work to right every wrong. Let us have faith that God is going to carry the noble ship which bears the people of God safely into port.–2SM 390 (1892). {LDE 52.1}

It is only by our doubt in God and His clear plans, or unwillingness to be humble, that we are afraid that His Church might fall.

Still any doubts? In 1908, Sister White made this statement:
“I am instructed to say to Seventh-day Adventists the world over, God has called us as a people to be a peculiar treasure unto Himself. He has appointed that His church on earth shall stand perfectly united in the Spirit and counsel of the Lord of hosts to the end of time.–2SM 397 (1908). {LDE 55.3}

– This is impossible to misunderstand!
– United in the Spirit AND counsel. We know God’s counsel also on organization, that there will be nothing else than the organized SDA Church in the end, as a place for His true children.

“I am encouraged and blessed as I realize that the God of Israel is still guiding His people and that He will continue to be with them, even to the end.–2SM 406 (1913).

W.C. White said the following in the year of Sister White’s death:
– If this is true, we can go no other place, because God will have an organized system until the end.

Jesus told things to the disciples so clearly, but yet they didn’t take it to heart, but rather started to speculate about an earthly kingdom.
Jesus said: I will die. I But I will raise again, and go before you to Galilee (Matt 26:32), etc.

Amos 3:7: Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
– God prophesied the fall of the Jewish Church through Daniel 9, the apostolic Church through Revelation 14.

But with the Remnant Church, God has revealed that it will not fall, for His glory.

The Word is clear, the SOP is clear about the Church. Will we do the same mistake as the disciples? Do we rather want to wait until after it happens. Then it might be to late.

8 Reasons Why God’s Remnant Church Will Not Fall

  1. God’s Word identifies an end time remnant, with clear characteristics of the SDA Church.
    The prophecies reveal nothing after this. God’s remnant in the Book of Revelation is clearly victorious. (Rev. 14)
    A remnant of organized Israel entered the promised land. No heathens a part from the system entered.
  2. The gospel plan requires organization – it cannot fail at the end of the Great Controversy.
    Like we read, EGW says that the organization of the Church “was in harmony with the gospel plan of uniting in one body all believers in Christ.”If the other Churches failed, His last Church will not fail. God is a God of order, and if He cannot organize things on earth, through His Church, it would be a failure. We know that the WHOLE gospel plan will succeed, finally.
  1. The Mystery of God will finish in the very end.
    The Church is at the theatre of the universe. What Israel did not accomplish as a people, God will accomplish with His last organized Church. He will “present to himself a glorious Church.”
    Organization has been important for God ever since He had a people on earth. If God has used organized churches here on earth, which have been falling, why would the last organized Church fall, if God in His foreknowledge has planned things.
    That would not be considered a victory in the Great Controversy.
  2. There will be tares among the wheat, until the harvest.
    This terminology, in statements made about the Church, must mean the visible Church, as God’s invisible Church will have no tares! As the harvest comes, the sinners will be sifted out.
  3. The countless statements in the Spirit of Prophecy about the success of the Church.
    Despite of its many errors, the Church is not to fall. She rebuked people who pronounced judgment on the Church.
    She uses the terminology: Church militant (fighting) that will transition into Church Triumphant.
  4. The Sanctuary reveals the final victory of the Church.
    There is a pattern in the sanctuary how God raises up Churches.
    Psalms 77:13: Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
    There are many symbols in the Sanctuary, also regarding the Churches He has raised up.
    1. The sacrificial system started, as the Jewish movement started and later became organized.
    The sacrifices pointed to Christ.
    2. As all were getting fulfilled in the court, the Jewish system was no longer God’s Church. Now the Apostolic movement started, and Christ went into the Holy Place in heaven. This also got organized.
    3. The Apostolic movement fell (Babylon), and was no longer God’s Church. At the time when Christ entered into the Most Holy Place, in 1844, the advent movement was established, and later became formally organized.
    There is no more section in the sanctuary. All present truth is in the Holy Place. Thus, God will make sure this Church will be victorious. Just as God will cleanse the Sanctuary, His house, he will cleanse his Church.
    At the day of atonement, God’s organized Church gathered around the sanctuary, and a cleansing process took place. We are living in the antitypical day, and it won’t be different.
    “Let them build me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.” – His Church will be clean so God can fully be there.
  5. The gathering of one fold that follows the voice of Christ.
    John 10, Jeremiah 23, Joel, Nehemiah, and other places is pointing to this.
    This is why we preach the 2nd angel’s message. It will be accomplished before Jesus returns. It’s a condition for the latter rain.
  6. God organized it, for such a time as this.
    God has a body – His Church, where Christ is the head, that one day will become glorious.He has a great purpose for His Church, to be part of the end of the Great Controversy! His Church is the destination of the Remnant.
    By the way, the greek word for Church: ekklesia, basically means the called out ones. God is using His remnant Church to call people out from Babylon.
    But there will be a cleansing process in the Church, which is going to happen at the theatre scene of the universe. All will see, what God will accomplish.
    Mark 10:9: What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

ILL: Brian had been writing many books about that SDA had fallen, being Babylon and left the Church. After his good friend had showed him very clearly, he got touched. With tears in his eyes, he admitted that it is impossible to support his view taking all EGW quotes into consideration.
Suddenly he said:
“I know that what you are saying is correct, but I have written so many books that calls the Church Babylon. I can never explain to all these people that I was wrong.”
After this, he continued to defend his view.
Unfortunately, he was so deep into error, that even when he saw more than the few quotes defending his view, when he saw the more complete picture, he decided to decline the clear truth. Pride was in the way!

May this not be the case for us!

Matthew 16:18: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

God does not conceal His truth from men. By their own course of action they make it obscure to themselves. Christ gave the Jewish people abundant evidence that He was the Messiah…They were afraid of being convinced lest they should be converted and be compelled to give up their preconceived opinions. – COL 105
Sadly this is true for many people!

The organized movement of Israel that entered Caanan is the type for God’s last day Church that will enter the heavenly Caanan. There were very few, but they made it to Caanan. This should be a motivation for us to bring as many with us to heaven as we can. While the organized system one day will not be accepted by the world (When we cannot by or sell as described in Revelation 13), we have seen through this study that God still will have an organized Church until the end. The organization at this point may not be exactly as it is today, but God is a God of order, and He will take care of His Church.

Jesus said:
John 10:14: I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
John 10:15: As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
John 10:16: And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

This is a prophecy of what will happen soon – the sheep will come to the one fold that Christ gathers them in His last Church, which is the destination of the Remnant. But the Church doesn’t save us – Christ does, as He gathers His remnant and point them to His fold.

The Bible says that our day is like Noah’s day
(Luke 17:26, 27).

How many ways of escape were there in Noah’s day?
Only one, the ark. Once again, today, God has provided only one ship, or church, that will take His people safely through to His heavenly kingdom. Be sure to get on the right ship!
This doesn’t mean that the church saves you, but it is the destination of the remnant. God is doing the sifting!

In Noah’s day, only eight people (including Noah himself) heeded God’s invitation.

Jesus is waiting at the door of His end-time ark, or remnant church, for all His people.

If the SDA Church is the destination of all God’s people, we need to speak our message with a loud voice, AND lead people into His Church, despite the laodicean condition.

Will you answer the call of Jesus as He calls His sheep to one fold?

“A well-nigh universal disregard of the law of Jehovah is rapidly making the world like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. As in the days before the Flood, violence is filling the land….The wickedness of men has almost reached its limit.

In many ways Satan is revealing that he rules the world. He is influencing the hearts of men and corrupting their minds. Men in high places are giving evidence that their thoughts are evil continually. Many are seeking after riches and scruple not to add to their wealth through fraudulent transactions…The Lord in compassion is seeking to enlighten the understanding of those who are now groping in the darkness of error. He is delaying His judgments upon an impenitent world, in order that His light bearers may seek and save that which is lost. He is now calling upon His church on the earth to awake from the lethargy that Satan has sought to bring upon them, and fulfill their heaven-appointed work of enlightening the world…

The world today is in crying need of a revelation of Christ Jesus in the person of His saints. God desires that His people shall stand before the world a holy people. Why?—because there is a world to be saved by the light of gospel truth; and as the message of truth that is to call men out of darkness into God’s marvelous light is given by the church, the lives of its members, sanctified by the Spirit of truth, are to bear witness to the verity of the messages proclaimed.” TM 457-458

The Mission Statement of the church:
“The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to make disciples of all people, communicating the everlasting gospel in the context of the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14:6-12, leading them to accept Jesus as personal Savior and unite with His Remnant Church, discipling them to serve Him as Lord and preparing them for His soon return.”

Baptismal vows:
“9. Do you believe in church organization? Is it your purpose to worship God and to support the church through your tithes and offerings and by your personal effort and influence?

13. Do you accept and believe that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the remnant church of Bible prophecy and that people of every nation, race, and language are invited and accepted into its fellowship? Do you desire to be a member of this local congregation of the world church?” (SDA Church Manual)

#12 and #13 from our fundamental beliefs.

The church is the community of believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. In continuity with the people of God in Old Testament times, we are called out from the world; and we join together for worship, for fellowship, for instruction in the Word, for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, for service to all mankind, and for the worldwide proclamation of the gospel. The church derives its authority from Christ, who is the incarnate Word, and from the Scriptures, which are the written Word. The church is God’s family; adopted by Him as children, its members live on the basis of the new covenant. The church is the body of Christ, a community of faith of which Christ Himself is the Head. The church is the bride for whom Christ died that He might sanctify and cleanse her. At His return in triumph, He will present her to Himself a glorious church, the faithful of all the ages, the purchase of His blood, not having spot or wrinkle, but holy and without blemish.

(Gen. 12:3; Acts 7:38; Eph. 4:11-15; 3:8-11; Matt. 28:19, 20; 16:13-20; 18:18; Eph. 2:19-22; 1:22, 23; 5:23-27; Col. 1:17, 18.

Remnant and Its Mission

The universal church is composed of all who truly believe in Christ, but in the last days, a time of widespread apostasy, a remnant has been called out to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. This remnant announces the arrival of the judgment hour, proclaims salvation through Christ, and heralds the approach of His second advent. This proclamation is symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14; it coincides with the work of judgment in heaven and results in a work of repentance and reform on earth. Every believer is called to have a personal part in this worldwide witness.

(Rev. 12:17; 14:6-12; 18:1-4; 2 Cor. 5:10; Jude 3, 14; 1 Peter 1:16-19; 2 Peter 3:10-14; Rev. 21:1-14.)
